![]() I eventually replaced the $400.00 paperweight with a Rockford Fosgate 550X. ![]() When I brought my amplifier back to the dealer the second time, another customer was purchasing a Rockford amplifier to replace his broken Soundstream paperweight. Apparently, Soundstream's quality control recently went down the sh#tter. The dealer told me that I am not the only unfortunate victim of the Soundstream name. When I brought the amplifier back to the dealer, there was a "graveyard" of broken Soundstream amps in his back room. After trouble shooting, I traced the problem back to the amplifier. When I turned my stereo on one night a few weeks ago, popping noises started coming through the system. The amplifier was returned a few weeks later, and worked for about three months. The dealer decided to have the amplifier fixed for me locally by a reputable electronics repairman. Soundstream was apparently not interested in doing any warranty work. He was told that that the waiting period for warranty work was between three and six months. The dealer I bought it from contacted Soundstream, who gave him the runaround. ![]() The amplifier broke after about three weeks of usage. This is the worst piece of SH#T that I have ever owned. Out of all of the 4 channel amps I have run in the past, or dealt with, the Rubicon 604 is definately among the best. The amplifier is mounted upside down on the ceiling of my trunk (a no no for most amps, especially Soundstream.), however I have a fan blowing across the heatsinks to keep it cool. I have had no problems with clipping, and heat is minimal. It gives them plenty of power to thrive on, and NO distortion. I have run 6 amps on the Polks and this one is BY FAR the most musical. meaning too much distortion, too little power, etc.). My JL 4"s don't take much to be happy, however the Polk Dbs are pretty picky about what they like (they are strictly a sound quality series, so they perform ackwardly with many amps that don't feed them right. Soundstream gave the amp a generic rating of "S/N >100db" and "THD <.1%", however the actual ratings are around 112-115db S/N and. ![]() The amp is running 4ohm loads at 85+ underrated Watts per channel (more realistically around 100 Watts of continuous power per channel). I am running it off of an Alpine CDA-9815 headunit to a pair of Polk Audio Db series 6.5" components, and a pair of JL Audio 4" components. This amplifier does just that, and it does it well. but only to take the signal put out from the headunit and, well, amplify it. It is not supposed to add anything in, or take anything out. The purpose of an amplifier is to do just that. That’s because PDF editing APIs can communicate with the compressed PDF file without ever having to open it they can make meaningful edits (such as rotating pages, removing comments, etc.) and, on the opposite end of the spectrum, they can extract targeted content without having any impact on the original document at all. To edit and process PDFs at scale, third-party API services represent the most efficient solution. These solutions, while effective on a file-by-file basis, aren’t great for achieving results at scale, however - they still require manual navigation through an interface, which takes up time most people don’t have to waste on high-volume conversion tasks. Further, you’re asking for that text - which can contain a lot of complex formatting encoded from a proprietary application like Microsoft Word - to be normalized in a way that anyone on any platform can read it.īecause of the relative difficulty associated with performing simple editing tasks on a PDF, it’s common practice to use third-party PDF editors (or premium Adobe tools) to achieve the desired results. When you attempt to get plain text from a regular PDF document, what you’re really trying to do is isolate one specific piece of a PDF’s many possible content types and only retain the text content from it. If you’ve tried to extract text from a scanned or rasterized PDF (one that is entirely made up of two-dimensional images with pixels) using those same tools, you’ve probably noticed that it isn’t possible at all - at least, not without a specialized Optical Character Recognition (OCR) service a very separate, albeit equally important solution to the PDF-to-text problem. ![]() When you just wanted the plain text portion, that clutter is a big distraction, and you’re still left with the task of separating text from the new document and manually normalizing that anyway. If you’ve ever attempted to extract text by - for example - hastily converting a PDF to an office document format (perhaps using one of the hundreds of free PDF conversion tools available online), especially without knowing what the original document format was, you’ve likely experienced a huge amount of formatting inconsistencies, strange spacing issues, missing links or media files, and random lines or tables floating around where they shouldn’t be. So, what if you just want to extract plain, unformatted text from a PDF - and nothing more special than that? There are many reasons why getting pure text is useful, but extracting it in a convenient, scalable way isn’t as simple as it may seem. ![]() It doesn’t help that they are designed and programmed to be difficult to edit in the first place it’s part of what makes PDFs a secure and reliable format in the first place. Because PDFs handle so many different content types in one file, they go through extensive compression to achieve an easily portable size, which means opening a PDF document and changing its contents is never a straightforward task. In fact, almost everything that makes PDFs such an ideal solution for reformatting externally/manually generated material conversely makes them one of the more challenging formats to manipulate. If there is one major drawback to PDF documents, it is that they are notoriously difficult to edit. The list of *insert document* to PDF conveniences goes on and on. Formats like Microsoft Word DOCX simply can’t be opened as intended on many operating systems the PDF version easily retains the same fonts and formatting edits included in the original, allowing the end viewer to see an exact visual representation of the document as it was intended. File types like PowerPoint’s PPTX, for example, are often so large that exporting the file as a PDF is the only efficient way to make the project shareable PDF’s vector and raster graphics capabilities offer an ideal solution, maintaining a perfect representation of the original document while achieving much better compression for sharing. ![]() Capable of holding an impressive variety of content/object types and working seamlessly on any operating system you can think of, PDFs dominate personal and professional project landscapes as a destination format for bulky and/or specially formatted files. There is perhaps no file type more ubiquitous (by design) than the Portable Document Format (PDF). ![]() ![]() Impulsive (Calculating -1) + Daring (Valor 1) = Brave But Headstrong Generous (Generosity 1) = Generous To Friends ![]() Some combination of traits can override others. Unfortunately at least one site relies on this bug (see this comment). So it seems like non-Edge and non-Firefox browsers treat a position: fixed element as a position: absolute element (or something?), when contained by a position: relative parent that also has a z-index set. The only browser this seems to make a difference in is Chrome on Android, which now clips the child element. Mobile + Desktop Opera (Blink): same as ChromeĪnd now, a 3rd testcase which adds user-scalable=no to the meta (viewport) element (the same effect happens if you constrain intial-scale and maximum-scale to 1. Mobile + Desktop Opera (Presto): same as Safariĭesktop Chrome: if the viewport is smaller than the containing parent, then overflow: hidden on the parent kicks in (resize the browser window to see it). Mobile + Desktop Safari: fixpos element is clipped by parent (meaning overflow: hidden worked). Same as first testcase (what I would expect): Now if you throw in both a z-index: 1 (any number will do) and a position: relative on the parent element, things get…different. overflow: hidden on the parent is ignored. But how do browsers behave? Open this testcase and have a look:Įverything behaves as the spec describes. So, according that spec text, the parent element’s overflow shouldn’t have any effect because the fixpos’ parent element is the viewport. The only difference is that for a fixed positioned box, the containing block is established by the viewport. If you have an element with position: fixed inside of an element that has overflow: hidden, what’s the expected rendering when you need to, uh, overflow? Should the inner fixpos element be clipped by its parent or not?įixed positioning is similar to absolute positioning. ![]() ![]() After he was sentenced to life in prison (where he remains to this day), Bryant was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and deemed to have an IQ of 66, roughly the same as an eleven-year-old. From the very start, Bryant was beset with mental problems that made him act aggressively towards others and hold little concern for human safety. The film tells the life story of Tasmanian native Martin Bryant, who eventually was responsible for the largest massacre by a single person in Australian history after he killed 36 people at Port Arthur in 1996. ![]() He tried to recompose himself a few years later by going back to his roots with the Australian true-crime-thriller "The True History of the Kelly Gang." The relative success of that film didn't prompt Kurzel to return to the big studios, instead, he has doubled down on his newfound career path with "Nitram", which premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. However, Kurzel wasn't able to make the leap into studio filmmaking, as the film was a critical and commercial bomb. After that film's critical success, Hollywood came knocking as he was offered, and accepted, to direct the big-screen adaptation of the popular video game franchise "Assassin's Creed", which allowed him to reteam with Fassbender and Cotillard. He also was given the promotion of competing in the main competition of Cannes. That film's success immediately gave him the confidence to helm a much more violent and haunted adaptation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth", with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard in the lead roles. Kurzel broke onto the scene in 2011 with his feature debut, "The Snowtown Murders," which played as part of the Cannes Critics Week. *Watched at Cannes 2021 World Premiere* The career of Australian director Justin Kurzel, still very much in an early phase, has been one filled with drastic ups and downs. Final Say - It's not easy viewing and may be too real and raw for some but Nitram manages to tackle an extremely controversial subject matter in a masterful way and features a career defining performance from Caleb Landry Jones. Some may wonder no matter what at why exactly Nitram needed too be made but while it will undoubtedly be a film some need to avoid watching, Kurzel has created the Australian film of the year with a carefully considered and haunting examination of a human soul lost beyond repair. ![]() Often relegated to key bit parts in memorable films like Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Get Out or The Florida Project, it might not be a joyful role but Jones is a revelation in his portrayal of Bryant as the Texan born actor morphs into the skin of a character that wouldn't have been easy to come to terms, with the talented performer deserving of his Cannes Film Festival Best Actor win earlier this year. Similar in style and tone to Kurzel's most revered work, his exploration of another dark chapter in Australia's history, Snowtown, Nitram is an unflashy film built around its carefully constructed dialogue and everyday humans that for all intents and purposes are battling too stay afloat mentally and physically but while Kurzel finds himself back in form after the misguided Assassin's Creed and the rather disappointing True History of the Kelly Gang, the work of Landry Jones in his most difficult role to date should go down as one of the best in an Australian production in the last decade. Refraining from venturing deep into the actual incident itself or the aftermath of Bryant's actions, Nitram (the name used sparingly throughout the film for Jones's character) is about as delicate as a film could be about the life of a tormented and lonely soul, one who was clearly unable to live an everyday life with his parents (played well by Australian icons Judy Davis and a nearly unrecognizable Anthony LaPaglia) and then in his friendship with fellow recluse Helen (played by Essie Davis). An incident that shocked the usually peaceful lands down under and forever changed the gun laws of the nation, Bryant's horrific act isn't an incident many would care to revisit but thanks to the work of director Justin Kurzel and his awards worthy leading man Caleb Landry Jones, Nitram never veers into territory that is aimed at pure shock value or an exploration that tries to offer a sympathetic few to what made Bryant into the man he became. Tackling one of the rawest subject matters in Australia history, Nitram is an unnerving yet delicately made and acted drama exploring the life of infamous Tasmanian mass murderer Martin Bryant, a man who is responsible for the cold blooded and nightmarish Port Arthur massacre of 1996. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The most extreme instance of this phenomenon is the “MacKeeper” scam.
